     Coaching for Addictions
By Lyn Kelley, Ph.D., MFT, CPC
Since about half of the U.S. population is an addict of some kind, chances are pretty good that your clients will at some point get involved with an addict.  Often clients will come to you with this presenting problem, but often they will disclose it after you've already been working with them for a while.
Addicts have a huge impact on their loved ones' lives.  Loving an addict -- whether it be your spouse, partner, child, adult child, friend, co-worker, or parent -- it is deeply disturbing.  Addicts usually bring us down more than they lift us up.  Sometimes we can go into deep despair. Just as addicts must come to the realization that they need help, YOUR CLIENTS also must admit that they need help in dealing with their addicted loved one.  If they come to you for assistance, you need to know how best to assist them.  If you don't feel you have the tools, you can refer them to a 12 Step Program such as ALANON, or a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor.
I believe that most addicted relationships can be saved, and can even become healthy and happy.   I’ve seen it happen over and over.  But it IS going to take a lot of WORK on both of their parts.   In fact, being in a relationship with an addict is the most difficult type of relationship to be in!
My mission is for YOU, the coach/counselor to become more empowered.  Once you feel empowered, you will be able to empower your clients.   I’ve found that the area most people have the most difficulty with empowerment is in relationships with addicts.   This is because most people who are with an addict become co-dependent (an addiction in itself).  Co-dependents take on behaviors such as trying to fix, trying to help, enabling, pleading, begging, threatening, nagging, complaining, etc., which usually don’t work – in fact they usually make the situation worse.  Co-dependents are often called co-addicts for this reason. If both of members of the relationship are addicts, they both need an equal amount of help.
The definition of an addiction is anything that controls you, and that you cannot stop on your own, has caused a problem in your life, and that if known to others would become a problem for them.  The most common “problem addictions” are alcohol, drugs, sex, porn, work, gambling, stealing, lying and cheating.
“First and foremost, trust your gut. If you think a loved one has a problem,” Interventionist William Oswald says, “you are probably right.   I know firsthand that living with an addict or an alcoholic active in their disease is a very difficult experience, where you wonder daily what the right thing is to do – all the while in the midst of an all-encompassing sense of hopelessness.”  You must be on the look-out for the early warning signs.

Early Warning Signs

--Secretive about a part of his/her life
--Undependable, often late, often doesn’t show up without a good explanation
--Gets drunk or loaded and is unable to drive or speak coherently
--Does and says things when using that he/she wouldn’t do or say when sober
--Feels he/she must drink as part of a social event, or it isn’t fun
--Gets angry and irritable for no good reason
--Often has to leave in the middle of your dates to “go to the bathroom,” “make a phone call,” “check on something at home,” “pick up a friend,” etc.
--Can’t remember what happened the next day
--Passes out and sleeps for long periods of time
--Gets sick often but resists medical attention
--Acts paranoid
--Stays out all night and you don’t know where he/she is and can’t reach him/her
--Lies or makes excuses about how much he/she drinks or uses
--Has a good job but always has financial problems
--Moody and often gets depressed
--Moods are all over the place – one minute he/she’s high, the next he/she’s low
--Drinks or uses when he/she said he/she wouldn’t
--Doesn’t want to spend too much time with you – definitely not a few days
--If you do go away for a few days together he/she gets moody and irritable after one day
--Doesn’t have a driver’s license or a working car
--Estranged from his/her family, or certain members
--Acts completely different when he/she drinks or drugs
--Acts unpredictably even when he/she’s sober
--Buys his/her prescription drugs in another country
--Spends a lot of time at casinos and if you go with him/her, he/she never seems to want to leave
--Says he/she has to take pain pills for his/her“ bad back” or “childhood injury”
--Has an unusually strong or low appetite
--Drives when he/she’s been drinking or using and says he/she’s “fine”
--Bartenders know him/her by name
--Has gotten in a lot of “fights”
--Often calls in “sick” to work
--Often drinks alone
--Has a shaky job history
--Spends hours and hours at a time on the phone, watching TV or on the Internet
--Says his/her last mate was controlling and/or judgmental
--Hangs out with others who drink and/or drug a lot
--Insists he/she’s okay to drive when you know they’re not
--Has kids but doesn’t see them, claiming his/her ex keeps them from him/her or his/her ex moved them far away
--Sometimes can’t remember what happened when he/she was drinking
--When he/she tries to stop, he/she shows visible signs of withdrawal such as feeling sick, sweating, shaking, and nervousness

Okay, so you get the picture.  Any one of these things does not an addict make.  However, if you notice several of them, you need to look deeper.   One of the main early signs is that he/she seems to have a secret life.    He/she keeps a part of his/her life from you.   You are not included in this part of his/her life, and you wonder what goes on there.  He/she’s been unpredictable or unreliable in some way that it’s made you concerned.

If you'd like to incorporate Addictions Counseling or Coaching into your list of specialties, and want to gain more competency, get my C.E. Course "Coaching for Addictions: Helping the Loved Ones of the Addict."  This month we're offering 50% OFF -- 10 C.E. Contact Hours -- only $48.50.

LPC's Can Soon Provide Care in Any State in the US
What is the Counseling Compact?

The Counseling Compact is an interstate compact, or a contract among states, allowing professional counselors licensed and residing in a compact member state to practice in other compact member states without need for multiple licenses.  Arizona and Minnesota are the first two states to complete the technical and regulatory steps necessary for implementation, including secure data sharing and system testing.

Currently, only:

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) licensed by Arizona and who live in Arizona can apply for the privilege to practice in Minnesota.

Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs) licensed by Minnesota and who live in Minnesota can apply for the privilege to practice in Arizona.

Across the country, 37 additional states and the District of Columbia are actively completing the steps needed to begin issuing and receiving privileges under the Counseling Compact.

Specialties:  Coaching for Recovery/Alcohol Use, Life/Growth Coaching

Mission Statement:  "To parner with individuals on their journey of meaningful growth, combining analytical insight with emotional understanding to help them transform challenges into achievable steps toward a more fulfilling life."

"My path to becoming a Certified Professional Coach (CPC) uniquely combines professional expertise with profound personal transformation.  With a BA in Psychology and over twenty years in healthcare analytics, I've developed the ability to transform complex data into meaningful insights.  However, it's my personal journey of healing and growth that truly drives my passion for coaching.

Growing up in a family impacted by alcohol addiction for generations, I later married someone who developed a drug addiction and tragically overdosed shortly after our divorce.  For years, I struggled with my own alcohol dependency as a way to cope with overwhelming emotions and unhappiness.  Over nine years ago, I removed alcohol from my life and began the healing process.  This personal experience with addiction, combined with over fifteen years of counseling, has given me deep insights into personal transformation and the power of sustained support in creating lasting change.

My approach to coaching uniquely integrates analytical thinking with emotional intelligence.  Just as I identify patterns and solutions in complex datasets, I help clients recognize patterns in their lives and develop strategies for positive change.  My psychology background provides theoretical foundation, while my years of personal growth work offer practical wisdom about transformation.  This combination allows me to maintain professional boundaries while drawing from authentic understanding of struggle and recovery.

Through my counseling journey, I've learned valuable tools for emotional regulation, boundary setting, and building resilience—insights I bring to my coaching practice.  My corporate experience has taught me to break down overwhelming challenges into manageable, actionable steps, a skill that proves invaluable when guiding clients through their own transformations.

Looking ahead, I plan to build a coaching practice specializing in personal transformation and recovery support, while also helping professionals create balanced, fulfilling lives.  My analytical background enables me to help clients develop clear, measurable goals and track their progress systematically.

The CPC certification represents more than just a credential—it's an opportunity to integrate my professional expertise, personal growth journey, and desire to serve others.  I aim to guide clients in transforming their challenges into stepping stones for growth, creating meaningful and lasting change in their lives.  My story demonstrates that our greatest struggles can become our greatest strengths when channeled toward helping others heal and thrive."
